The Effect of Selected Protease Inhibitors and Lectins in Artificial Diet on Survival and Growth of Eldana Saccharina Larvae

چکیده

Protease inhibitors, which can inhibit insect digestive enzymes, and carbohydrate binding lectins are potential control mechanisms against herbivorous insects. Larval midgut extracts fi-om Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were assayed for protease activity in the presence of protease inhibitors in order to determine the dominant protease types (serine, aspartic, metalloor cysteine). Through the use of protease inhibitors, serine proteases having activity similar to mammalian chymotrypsin/elastase were implicated as dominant. Protease inhibitors of this dominant activity were effective only in combination with lectins. Inhibitors of other protease classes were not effective. The selection and genetic engineering of suitable protease inhibitor and lectin genes into sugarcane are discussed. agglutinin (WGA) and selected protease inhibitors on larval survival and growth of the sugarcane borer Eldana sacchar i n ~ Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

Comparison between live food and artificial diet on survival rate, growth and body chemical composition of Oncorhynchus mykiss larvae

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of live food (Artemia urmiana) and commercial diet in rearing of Oncorhynchus mykiss larvae. Experiment started when larvae were 0.12g in weight. Triplicate groups of fish were offered one of four treatments: (1) a commercial starter food (2) live Artemia urmiana nauplii (for 3 days) (3) live Artemia urmiana nauplii (for 7 days) and (4) combin...

Fusarium Species Causing Pokkah Boeng and Their Effect on Eldana Saccharina Walker (lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Pokkah boeng is a fungal disease that can cause serious yield losses in susceptible varieties. Pokkah boeng is caused by Fusarium, but there is some debate regarding the species involved. Previous research has revealed that some Fusarium species isolated from sugarcane could benefit the development of the stalk borer, Eldana saccharina, a serious pest of sugarcane in South Africa. The aim of th...

Biocontrol of the sugarcane borer Eldana saccharina by expression of the Bacillus thuringiensis cry1Ac7 and Serratia marcescens chiA genes in sugarcane-associated bacteria.

The cry1Ac7 gene of Bacillus thuringiensis strain 234, showing activity against the sugarcane borer Eldana saccharina, was cloned under the control of the tac promoter. The fusion was introduced into the broad-host-range plasmid pKT240 and the integration vector pJFF350 and without the tac promoter into the broad-host-range plasmids pML122 and pKmM0. These plasmids were introduced into a Pseudo...
